Mais Fica Winery

Mais Fica Winery

Mais Fica Winery

Mais Fica is a small, family-owned vineyard and winery in the Sierra Nevada foothills producing Rhone style wines exclusively, from Grenache, Mourvedre, and Syrah grapes. The Portugese rooster is the national symbol of Portugal and symbolizes honesty, integrity, trust, and honor -- all values which are important to Mais Fica Winery.

Mais Fica (Maj Feeka) means "more for me" in Portuguese. Many descendants of Portugal and Les Açores know this phrase well and was a favorite expression of Marty's grandmother, Margaret Azevedo. She used it most frequently when her many grandkids did not eat all the food she lovingly served them. We truly hope you enjoy these wines, but if you don't, mais fica!

Mais Fica Winery - Marty and EileenMarty and Eileen first started making wine in the basement of their Redwood City home with a 1998 Barbera. After receiving numerous awards as home winemakers, they ventured forth into planning a commercial vineyard and winery. In 2001 they started planting a ten acre vineyard in Placerville CA. By 2007 Mais Fica was established as a commercial bonded winery.

As a micro boutique winery Mais Fica can do more things by hand and in small lots than larger wineries can afford to do. Award winning production is limited to less than 500 cases per year.

In 2009 Mais Fica transitioned from conventional farming to all organic farming practices. Yearly applications of organic compost and a fall seeding with crimson clover ensures good soil tilth, supplies a natural source of nitrogen and provides a means of soil erosion. Weeds are controlled by old fashioned hand labor.  Mais Fica releases thousands of lady bugs each year to combat insects and have installed three owl boxes to attract a natural predator to our gophers.

The grapes are hand picked and sorted before destemming and crushing. Fermentation takes place in small open top bins that allow punching down manually three times a day. After pressing, the wine is aged in a combination of French, Hungarian and American oak, as well as stainless steel barrels stored in temperature and humidity controlled winery until ready for bottling.  Click Here to read about wine making at Mais Fica.
