This is the Major Red. This is what some might call our 'everyday wine.’ Its certainly the most pallet friendly, very popular. Greg does our blending for us, and then we get to make the final decision together. This one is typically a Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Zinfandel blend. That is the basis of the blend.

We purchase grapes specifically for this blend. This isn't just the leftovers that we didn't use somewhere else, we purchase grapes for this program, the Major Red. It has the Syrah, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Teroldego, and Alicante Bouchet. (Just about 20% each.) The Sirah and Zinfandel are the fruit forward portions of this wine, and the Teroldego. Ursa Vineyards Wine OnlineThe structure in this wine comes from the Alicante Bouchet and from the Petite Syrah, so those give you the backbone for wine, the tannin, and the structure you’re looking for to hold the wine together. The Syrah, the Zin, and the Teroldego give you the nice fruit forward character. I put together a bunch of trials and then get the expert palette to taste it with me. :)

We try to keep this wine to be not a huge wine, so its very friendly, very palette friendly, not a big tannic wine, but very approachable and very fruit forward. One of our goals when we started this winery was to have one affordable wine that people could feel comfortable drinking every day if they want. For us, its one of the most fun wines to put together. There’s so much latitude, there’s no rules, we can do whatever we want, as far as what we put in. Oftentimes we’ll have some Viognier in this one… this one doesn’t happen to have any…

"So… it’s one of those cases where the recipe changes, to stay in the same place?"

Yes! Exactly. The blend will changes slightly from time to time, even year it’s never exactly the same… but the goal is consistency year to year.
