Nello Olivo Winery

Nello Olivo WineryNello Olivo is a second-generation Italian-American with a passion for excellent wine.

Nello Olivo wines are produced by Nello and Danica Olivo. The Olivos have chosen to grow old-world style grapes—particularly those common to regions of Italy, which flourish in the California Sierra Foothills terroir and climate.

The ranch sits in a slightly elevated area, at about 1350 feet above sea level, and has a climate that mostly resembles the Mediterranean areas of southern Italy, France and Spain.  There are several types of soil in areas where the Olivos planted their vineyard. Each soil type was paired with appropriate varietals.

Nello Olivo Wine MakerCabernet is planted at the highest point of the ranch is heavy with clay. In between were planted Petite Syrah, Sangiovese, Barbera and Merlot, plus the extraordinary Sagrantino grape, very high in tannin, found almost nowhere else in the US.  Primitivo is planted in a small vineyard on the opposite side of the acreage in an area of rocky decomposed granite soil semi-shaded by large oak trees.

Nello Olivo makes eleven varietals of wine from just eight acres of grapes in his El Dorado foothills vineyard. Marco Capelli, also a winemaker at Miraflores and Toogood wineries is the official winemaker for Nello Olivo wines. The number of awards Nello Olivo Wines has won is staggering- both from Nello's own award winning wines and from the grapes he has sold to local winemaking peers.

“When you produce only 3,000 cases of wine a year, you have to make every bottle count,” says Nello.
