Auriga Wine Cellars

Auriga Wine Cellars

AURIGA WINE CELLARS is located in Placerville, El Dorado County in Northern California.
"Auriga" is the ancient Greek and Roman name of a constellation in the Northern hemisphere and is commonly known as "The charioteer."Auriga Wine Cellars -Richard Stading

Auriga’s varietals include Sauvignon Blanc, Dry Rose, Riesling, Syrah, red blends and a port style dessert wine. Each lot is hand crafted and consists of 100-125 cases.  Richard is proud of his wines and the awards they have won from the Sierra Foothills/El Dorado Appellation. In addition to his Rhone varietals, he also makes Zinfandel, Barbera and Sangiovese.

Richard Stading's other career is as a nurse. This road to winemaking started in the Mideast in 1982, when he was doing a three-year nursing stint in an alcohol-free country, where the westerners drank anyway. He learned that his Irish neighbors had their own brewery. Most of his expat friends were either making beer or wine, and it wasn’t long before he got into the DIY spirit, buying unfiltered, unpasteurized grape juice from his local market and developing his own culture strains from starter yeast. Once back in the States, he enrolled in viticulture classes at the University of California, Davis, and at a community college to refine his winemaking skills, and began looking for land where he could grow his own grapes.

Auriga Wine Cellars -Richard StadingAuriga represents the charioteer from ancient Greek myth, the nurse who helped to raise Zeus before he overtook the titans.  Grateful to Auriga, Zeus gave her an enchanted horn which could produce food, water, and wine whenever she needed it and in whatever amounts she required.

This gift has often been referred to as the Horn of Plenty.

Highly fitting a nurse, and producer of wine,  Richerd has earned:

• Best of Show, El Dorado County sweet wine 2018
• Best Winemaker, 2018,
• Best Earth Friendly wines 2018, and
• Best wines made from El Dorado Grapes, 2018
• The 2018 El Dorado County Best Earth Friendly White,
• The 2018 Best El Dorado County Winemaker of the year,
• The 2018 Best Commercial Wine Producer from El Dorado County Grapes.

Poetic, Fitting, and Deserved.
