Cabernet Franc is primarily from the Gold Hill Vineyard in El Dorado County which overlooks the American River Canyon. The vineyard enjoys warm days and cooling breezes at night. This micro-climate allows an optimal ripening cycle and showcases a glowing example of the intense flavors possible from the Sierra Foothills Cabernet Franc grapes. The Sauber Vineyard is on the southern end of El Dorado County and has perfect ripening conditions and acclimation for Cab Franc.

This wine is made in a minimalist winemaking style following traditional methods; as well this wine shows aromas of lavender, violets and rose petals along with a rich black cherry backbone.

Although often used for blending, this Cabernet Franc is far better on its own – it is consistently one of Crystal Basin Cellars favorites. Previous vintages of Crystal Basin Cellars Cabernet Franc have won numerous major awards in wine competitions and this one is no exception.

This wine will benefits from a bit of time in the bottle to mellow the tannins and transform the intense fruit forward style of the wine to a smooth as silk elegant example of this right bank Bordeaux classic. This Cabernet Franc is peaking so order some now.

Vineyards: Gold Hill Vineyard and Sauber Vineyards, El Dorado County

    - I’m Mike Owen, Crystal Basin Cellars, and this is one of the wines we’re famous for, Cabernet Franc. We make it up here in a ninety year old, old apple barn. This wine is from two different vineyards in El Dorado County. One is about two miles from where gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill. And that was in the 1800’s, they planted a lot of grape out of there then. The other vineyard is out in Happy Valley which is further out, it’s a curvy road you don’t want to be on unless you have to. But they grow some really great Cabernet Franc Grapes. Know that its the Dad, of Cabernet Sauvignon. The Mom is Sauvignon Blanc…  Cabernet Franc >>> Sauvignon Blanc >>> the offspring is Cabernet Sauvignon. The after-finish is relatively short because there's not a lot of tannins. And one of the things it’s characterized by is a black Cherry, and then also violets and rose petal on the nose. That’s because of the decomposed granite soil that our area is known for.

This is an amazing Sierra foothills wine from one of the Carson Road Wineries.
